# Day One With GPT-6 Astra: My Basement, Rebuilt in Blender

I didn't know anything about 3D on Sunday morning. Truth be told, I still don't.   
  
But by Sunday night I had an editable Blender file of my own basement, with the ratty orange loveseat we got off Facebook Marketplace sitting in the right corner, and I still hadn't opened Blender myself.

In fact, the thing that finally got me to try GPT-6 Astra was watching people use it to drive Blender. 

OpenAI shipped GPT-6 Astra on September 3 and pitched it as a model that operates your computer, and the demos I kept seeing were people handing it a few photographs of a place and getting a 3D scene back. Some of those photos were bad, too. Grainy, badly lit, one angle. 

These days, I create lots of content just by repurposing items from my camera roll so I definitely had the use case for this. So, I signed up.

## Using GPT-6 Astra to model my basement in 3D

This year we ended up in a place with the first basement I have ever had. No windows, no clocks, time stands still down there. It's where I work now, and in the story I write for this site it's also where the crew "works."

Quick version of that story for anyone new: Me and my three dogs fled Lexicon City over their prohibition of AI and are holed up in a townhouse in Beacon City, a place which is a little more welcoming to our kind.   
  
The basement is their headquarters. Sherman runs the dispatch system, Wilson is the engineer, Sebastian is the spy. 

## Astra installed Blender and ran it with no window open

I had photos of the basement from before we moved in, taken while we were still looking at the place. I added a round of phone photos of the specific objects I wanted in the scene: the couch, my desk, the furnace, the water heater, the washer and dryer, an orange pipe with a pressure gauge, and the electrical panel with its mess of cables. Forty-one photos in total. I dropped them into the chat and asked whether it could build this in Blender.

Blender wasn't on my machine (because why would it, I am not a 3d modeler) so Astra downloaded it, installed it, and started it headless, which means Blender runs in memory with no interface open. It writes Python scripts, runs them against the scene, renders a still, and looks at the still to decide what to fix.

I never watched it work. One time I asked it to show me and it put Blender on screen, and I could see it moving cubes around and cutting shapes. Then I told it to carry on and went back to what I was doing.

The first version was a gray box, 20 by 40 feet with a seven-foot ceiling, which are my own walking estimates. The stairs, the panel, the water heater, and the furnace were roughed in where the walkthrough photos put them. From there the whole day was the same loop. I'd send photos of one object from three or four angles, it would model that object, render it, and I'd tell it what was wrong.

## Most of my job was saying "no, the other one"

It had the water heater and the furnace as one unit at first, so that got split. The stair rise was backwards, and the photos fixed that. The laundry goes across from the electrical panel, the desk goes to the right of the panel when you're facing it, and it took a few rounds of relative directions like those before the room matched the one I walk through every day.

The ceiling took the most explaining. Mine is white plastic sheeting over insulation, stapled to the joists and sagging between them. The first model had flat tiles. I described the sag and the staples, and it rebuilt the ceiling as individual panels with real folds in the geometry, and then added the staple crowns as tiny objects.

The floor went the other way. Its first concrete slab was scuffed up like a loading dock, and I asked for less.

The loveseat came out too big and got scaled to 85 percent of its width, then got sagging cushions and wrinkles. Every one of those corrections came from me looking at a render and comparing it to the room. I had no idea what a bevel or a UV map was, and I still don't. What I had was the photos and the fact that I live here.

Then the story stuff went in. Three AEGIS crates with the logo from my own brand files, masked so the mark reads as paint on the wood. Three Pelican-style cases, two black and one red, stacked along the bulkhead wall. A sliding password hatch cut into the white door. Nothing in the real basement looks like that, which is the point.

## The pretty concept images fooled me for about an hour

Partway through, I asked Astra to show me the kind of look I was going for, and it generated concept images of the room. They were gorgeous. Warm light, worn concrete, sticker-covered cases, a workstation with a real monitor arm. I assumed all of that was now in the Blender file.

It wasn't. A generated picture of a room is a picture. The model in Blender had none of those details, and if I'd moved the camera two feet the difference would have been obvious. 

That is the trap with this workflow and I walked straight into it. Remember, I'm not a 3d artist. But Astra helped me to understand the difference, and we went back to building persistent geometry and materials in the file.

Why do this at all?  
  
The reason I'm doing making this location a "set" in 3D is consistency. When I generate images for my story, I can never get a scene exactly the way I want it, and every retry costs about a buck. With a Blender scene I can put the camera on the ceiling, fly it around the room, change the light, and the couch is still the same couch. 

## The textures came from prompts, and the shading came from Blender

Astra wrote prompts for nine flat material images, one each for the concrete wall, the concrete floor, the woven ceiling scrim, PVC pipe, burnt-orange leather, brushed steel, black case polymer, pale pine, and foil duct wrap.   
  
Each prompt asked for an evenly lit, tileable, orthographic scan with no objects, no shadows, and no text, and specified roughly how much real-world surface the square should cover.

Blender doesn't get a roughness map or a bump map from a generator, so Astra wired the material graphs to fake both from the brightness of the image, then packed all nine images into the .blend so the file travels as one piece. 

The leather stretched badly on the first pass until the mapping got corrected. Every surface still needs a close-up check, because seamless was a request in the prompt and the generator does not owe you seamless.

I opened Blender myself for the first time on Tuesday to take the screenshot above. The node graph you're looking at is the real one from the file. Astra built it, and I rearranged the boxes so a person could read it. I vaguely understand what it does.

## Wilson's corner looked fake because the tools were fake

Wilson's engineering area is invented. There's no photo of it, because in real life that end of the basement has two kayaks in it. What we built is a low steel bench, 65 centimeters high, with three reinforced crates stacked as steps up to the work surface, metal shelving full of labeled parts bins, and a pegboard of tools. On the bench sits a dismantled AEGIS field terminal, cover off, board exposed.

The first render of it was dark and dramatic and I liked it for about a minute. Then I looked closer. The wrenches were gray sticks with no jaws, the boxes were perfect boxes, and the terminal was a green rectangle. All the atmosphere was doing the work that the modeling should have been doing, and low light was hiding it.

So I said so, and the next pass rebuilt every prop on the bench as real geometry. Open-jaw and ring wrenches. Pliers with red grips and a pivot. A claw hammer, four screwdrivers with fluted handles.

The terminal got a circuit board with individual chip packages and bent pins, capacitors, a ribbon cable, a heatsink, a wire harness, and a detached vented cover. A multimeter with probes sits at the end of the bench. And the lights came up, on purpose, so I could see all of it.

That was the lesson of the whole build so far. Resolution, geometry, material, and lighting each fix a different problem, and none of them can cover for another. A bigger render can't turn a stick into a wrench, and no leather texture will give a cushion its shape. Dark scenes hide weak modeling, so you check your work with the lights on, and then you turn them back down for the cinematic version.

## What it cost, and the render I can't afford yet

Day one alone used about 40 percent of my weekly Astra allowance. By Tuesday I had a saved project file with 34 Python scripts behind it, twenty renders, a four-shot camera tour of 384 frames, and a room I can keep changing forever. 

The loop at the top of this post is the same camera move rendered in Eevee, Blender's real-time engine, at 1080p. That took about an hour on my M1 Mac mini.

Rendering the tour in Cycles at 4K with the final materials would take this machine something like 36 hours.

A person who actually knows Blender would look at this scene and see a lot of approximation. The furnace is set dressing, the wiring is decorative, the fine print on the labels is gibberish, and the whole room is my walking estimate of the dimensions. What I have is a set, built by describing my house to something that can operate the software in about half of a day. It's definitely serviceable for sharing on social media, using in a blog post, or demonstrating a concept to a client.

## Whether a scene built in a real tool reads differently from a generated one

Part of me wonders whether people would accept work made this way more readily than they accept a generated image. Astra is driving a real tool, writing real geometry into a real file that a human Blender artist could open and keep working on. At no point is any frame an AI image. 

I don't know if that distinction holds up for anyone but me. I also don't know if it should. What I do know is that I have a folder of photos of a basement, a file that turns them into a place where the story can happen, and a render queue I can't run operationally until I get a better computer.
