demonflyingfox Remade the Balenciaga Video Three Years Later

In 2023 demonflyingfox deliberately used an outdated Midjourney model so the characters would never look real. In 2026 the same videos got remade with tools that no longer allow that choice.

Three figures come down the corridor of a night train, all in black. A structured gown with sharp shoulders in the middle, a long coat either side, round glasses catching the lamplight. They walk like models on a runway and the carriage is lit like a campaign shoot.

That is Harry Potter, restyled as a Balenciaga advert. It is also the second time this particular video has been made.

On 15 March 2023, the demonflyingfox channel posted the first one, "Harry Potter by Balenciaga" — the Hogwarts cast restyled as models in a fashion campaign, each one turning to camera and delivering a line in a flat synthetic voice. It has 14.7 million views. For a stretch of 2023 it was the most-watched thing an independent creator had made with AI video tools, and Dazed covered it as a fashion story rather than a technology one.

The old model was the point

Two weeks after it went up, TechCrunch asked about the misinformation question — this was the same month the fake image of the Pope in a puffer jacket was fooling people at scale. The answer was that the work is built not to be believed.

"What I'm doing is so obviously fake that I don't really worry about spreading misinformation, nor is it my intention."

The mechanism behind that was a version number. Midjourney had newer models available; the videos were made on Midjourney 4 on purpose, so the characters would stay far enough from photographic to read as a joke on sight. The waxy skin and the slightly wrong faces were a setting, chosen and kept.

The same interview carries the other half of it: "I know of the power of the tools and that it's very easy right now to do so."

Then it got made again

In March 2026 the channel posted "Harry Potter by Balenciaga (2026)." Same premise, same runway, rebuilt. It took 2.0 million views. "Breaking Bad by Balenciaga (2026)" followed in April with 583,000, and a sequel in June with 511,000.

The stack underneath had changed completely. The 2023 videos were Midjourney stills animated with D-ID, with ElevenLabs for the voices. The tool list published in the current video descriptions reads: Kling AI for video, InVideo for the edit, ElevenLabs for voice, Suno for music, Epidemic Sound, and DistroKid for distribution.

Nothing in that list has a knob for looking less real.

Watch the two next to each other and the deliberate wrongness of the first one is easy to see, because the second one does not have it. The 2026 characters hold together. Whether that ends the argument the 2023 quote was making, or just moves it somewhere else, is a question the channel has not answered in public.

The work comes in runs

Look down the upload history and the shape is a formula, found and worked until it is used up, then replaced with another one.

The channel opened with a set of "[franchise] but in Berlin" mashups — Home Alone, Game of Thrones, The Lord of the Rings. The Balenciaga videos came next, then fourteen entries shot as 1950s Super Panavision 70, the fake-vintage-trailer format.

After that, more than thirty videos in a run where every property got a Redneck version: Harry Potter, Dune, Jurassic Park, The Simpsons, Game of Thrones. North Korea followed, and Vietnam, and a stretch about Bigfoot.

Each run is a single joke tested against every property that will hold it. The Redneck sequence alone is longer than most channels' entire output.

The bands release records

The current run is fake groups with real distribution. Canadian Resistance Army, Democratic Penguins Republic, Greenland Defense Front, The American Miners — none of them exist, and their songs are on their Spotify artist page and on Apple Music, pushed through DistroKid like any independent release.

"Canadian Resistance Army — Lake Ontario" went up on 28 August 2026 and passed 2.4 million views inside a week.

The visual grammar is consistent across all of them: animals in military dress, shot like a prestige war film, playing it entirely straight. The joke is never signposted inside the frame.

The name is demonflyingfox

That is the whole of it — the handle is the identity, on the channel, the site, the streaming profiles and in the 2023 press coverage, which quotes demonflyingfox rather than a person. The channel description is one line: "Hi, I'm demonflyingfox and I want to show what's possible with AI."

Every video carries a disclaimer that the work is parody and that the properties belong to their owners.

Where to go next

If the anonymity is the part that interests you, how Voidstompers built an audience on glitch art is the same shape — a handle everybody knows attached to a person nobody does. And for deliberate period-wrongness as a craft choice rather than an accident, what STR4NGETHING does with the wrong era sits right next to the Super Panavision run.

The most recent upload is another Democratic Penguins Republic single. The penguins have been going since early 2025, which makes them the longest-running band on a channel where nothing is supposed to last.
